Why We Do This?
A final resting place is as much about those left behind as it is those who have departed.
Everyone should have a peaceful final resting place regardless of their financial or social status in life.
Sadly in 2020, 9% of people faced with a funeral struggled to pay for it, with the number of people turning to public health funerals increasing by 70% between 2015 and 2018.
Funeral poverty has drastic long-lasting effects on people’s lives; it gets in the way of people’s ability to grieve. Grief Counsellors have noted that it is essential for the bereaved to have a place to visit, remember, mourn, honour, and recover. Having a final resting place also helps other family members and friends with their grief.
According to the Sunlife Cost of Dying Report 2021 1 in 7 families who had to organise a funeral said that it caused them financial difficulty.
In the same report, funeral directors reported that one of the challenges facing the funeral industry is the rising costs:
“I think it’s funeral poverty and bad debt. People can’t afford it as the prices are increasing.”
